IPL Photo Rejuvenation
Gentle light-based skin renewal
IPL Photo Rejuvenation is a light-based treatment I use at Skin Health Studio when we’re working on visible sun damage, pigmentation, redness, and uneven skin tone.
It’s a lovely option for skin that has started to look a little patchy, dull, or marked from sun exposure. This is something I see a lot, especially after summer, when pigment starts sitting a bit more visibly and the skin doesn’t look as clear as it used to.
IPL can be very effective when the skin is ready for it, but it does need to be used at the right time and in the right way. I’ll always look at your skin first and make sure this is the best approach for what we’re treating.
IPL Photo Rejuvenation Treatment Menu
IPL Photo Rejuvenation uses controlled pulses of light to target colour within the skin. This may include excess pigment from sun exposure, uneven tone, or some types of visible redness.
When the light is absorbed by pigment, it helps break it down so the skin can gradually clear and renew. Pigmentation may darken slightly after treatment before it begins to soften or fade, which is a normal part of the process.
IPL can be used on areas such as the face, neck, chest, and hands, depending on your skin and what we’re working on.

What does IPL Photo Rejuvenation help with?
IPL Photo Rejuvenation is commonly used for sun damage, freckles, pigmentation, redness, uneven skin tone, and skin that is looking a little tired or dull.
I often recommend it for clients who are starting to notice the effects of past sun exposure. This can show up as patches of pigment, darker spots, or a general lack of clarity through the skin.
It can also be helpful when redness and uneven tone are making the skin look more flushed or unsettled than it really is.
Melasma is a little different. It can be more reactive and is often triggered by heat, hormones, inflammation, and light exposure, so IPL is not always the first place I would start. In those cases, we may need to focus on calming the skin, strengthening the barrier, and using the right homecare before we consider targeted treatments.
How does IPL Skin Rejuvenation work?
IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light. It works by sending controlled light energy into the skin, where it is absorbed by colour targets such as pigment or visible redness.
Once that light is absorbed, it converts to heat and helps break down the visible discolouration. The skin then gradually clears this through its natural renewal process.
Because the skin needs time to respond, results build gradually. Some clients notice improvement after one treatment, but a course is usually recommended for the best results.
This is why I always like to look at the skin properly first. IPL is a beautiful treatment when it’s right for the skin, but we want to make sure we’re treating the right concern at the right time.
What to expect during your IPL Photo Rejuvenation treatment
During your IPL treatment, you’ll feel quick flashes of light and a warm snapping sensation on the skin. Some areas may feel more sensitive than others, but most clients find the treatment very manageable.
After your treatment, the skin may look a little flushed or feel warm for a short time. Pigmentation can darken before it begins to lift or fade, which is expected with this type of treatment.
There is very little downtime, but you will need to be careful with sun exposure afterwards. SPF and the right homecare are essential, especially when we’re working on pigmentation.
IPL Skin Rejuvenation Results
Results from IPL Photo Rejuvenation build gradually as the skin responds. Pigmentation may start to soften, redness can appear calmer, and the overall tone of the skin can look clearer and more even over time.
For best results, a course of treatments may be recommended. Your plan will depend on your skin, the type of pigmentation or redness we’re treating, and how your skin responds after each session.
IPL Skin Rejuvenation FAQs
What is IPL Photo Rejuvenation used for?
IPL Photo Rejuvenation is used to improve the appearance of pigmentation, sun damage, redness, uneven tone, and dull-looking skin.
It’s often a good option when the skin has visible sun damage or pigment that has become more noticeable over time.
Is IPL good for pigmentation?
IPL can work very well for sun-induced pigmentation when the skin is suitable. It targets excess pigment in the skin and helps break it down gradually. After treatment, pigmentation may look darker before it starts to fade, which is a normal part of the process.
Not all pigmentation should be treated with IPL straight away. I’ll always assess your skin first so we choose the safest and most effective approach.
Can IPL treat melasma?
Because melasma can be triggered by heat, light, hormones, and inflammation, IPL is not always the best starting point. For many melasma clients, we begin with barrier repair, calming the skin, LED, and targeted homecare before looking at anything more active.
If IPL is appropriate, it needs to be done very carefully and at the right time.
Does IPL help with redness?
IPL can help with some types of visible redness and uneven flushing in the skin. If the redness is coming from inflammation, sensitivity, or a compromised barrier, I may recommend calming and strengthening the skin first so it responds better.
How many IPL treatments will I need?
Most clients need a course of treatments for the best result. The number will depend on what we’re treating, how long the pigmentation or redness has been there, and how your skin responds. I’ll guide you once I’ve seen your skin properly.
What will my skin look like after IPL?
Your skin may look flushed or feel warm after treatment, and pigmentation can darken slightly before it fades.
This usually settles over the following days. You’ll need to avoid strong sun exposure, heat, and active skincare for a short period after treatment. SPF is essential.
Can IPL be combined with other treatments?
Yes, IPL can work beautifully as part of a wider skin plan.
Clinical LED Light Therapy, Skin Health Facials, and the right homecare can all help prepare and support the skin before and after IPL. This can make a big difference to how well your skin responds.
When is the best time of year to have IPL?
Autumn and winter are usually the best times to start IPL treatments.
There is generally less sun exposure, which makes it easier to protect the skin properly while we work on pigmentation, redness, and uneven tone.
